Supplies that you'll need:

  • doneSpecially marked Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal box
  • doneScissors
  • doneTape
  • doneString
  • done2 Pencils

Simple Machine #4 Directions

  1. Start by opening and flattening the box completely at the box's seams.
  2. Find the side with the printed blueprints for the Simple Machine.
  3. Start at the and cut along the dotted lines. Cut out each piece along its dotted line.
  4. Ask an adult to punch a hole through each "X".
  5. Tape the box together, leaving the top open.
  6. Cut a piece of string the height of the box. Run one piece of string through the holes next to each other on piece #1 and tie a knot at the end of the string. Repeat this step for the other side of piece #1.
  7. Fold and tape piece #1 into a box with one open side.
  8. Place two pencils through the holes on both sides of the box.
  9. Cut a piece of string 3x the height of the box. Tie one end of string to the two loops of string connected to piece #1. Face the open end of piece #1 towards the open boxes on the side of the box.
  10. Thread the other end of the string over one pencil, around the other pencil and out the hole on the side of the box.
  11. Use the string to raise the elevator to the top window, load your Cinnamon Toast Crunch and lower the elevator to your cereal bowl.

Rube Goldberg


Rube Goldberg (1883-1970) was a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist best known for his zany invention cartoons. He was born in San Francisco on the 4th of July, 1883 - and graduated from U. Cal Berkely with a degree in engineering. His first job at the San Francisco Chronicle led to early success, but it wasn't until he moved to NYC and began working for Hearst publications that he became a household name. Rube Goldberg is the only person ever to be listed in the Merriam Webster Dictionary as an adjective. It's estimated that he did a staggering 50,000 cartoons in his lifetime.
